The Most Dreamy Getaway Spots Of 2021

Another year of lockdowns later, and the thirst for local getaways gets even stronger! We wrote about these sublime accommodation spots with wanderlust surging through our veins, and now that summer is here it seems the perfect time to revisit our favourites.

From beach shacks on Stradbroke Island, to a Blue Mountains weekender that floats above the clouds, these are the hottest holiday rentals we featured this year!

A Secluded Alpine A-Frame In Kangaroo Valley

Sophie Lord and her partner (architect Ben Gray) bought this 16-acre plot of land in the middle of the Kangaroo Valley on a drizzly Monday morning three years ago completely on a whim. It had been on the market for two years and was overgrown with tall weeds, tumbledown sheds, rusty tractor parts and wild bamboo. There was no septic tank, power or water, but it was perfect.

In the years since purchasing the plot of land, they’ve crafted a beautiful piece of accommodation. The A-frame is made from recycled, natural or sustainably sourced materials – creating a sheltered, secluded nook in the middle of regional New South Wales that’s finally ready for visitors. Slice of heaven right there!

A Perfect Day in Melbourne with Melissa Leong

We’re closing out our recent video series in partnership with Visit Victoria with an obvious – yet perhaps, surprising inclusion – Melbourne! As you probably know, I’m a Melbourne girl through and through, and my love of our beautiful, creative...

    A Mediterranean-Style Farmhouse Accommodation

Nestled between the Southern Highlands and the New South Wales South Coast is Kangaroo Valley, a two hour drive from Sydney. In this lush idyllic location surrounded by rainforest and waterfalls is The Casa, an accommodation offering from Suzy and Nick O’Rourke, the couple behind The Shed in Gerroa (see our feature on that spot here!).

With interiors transformed by Suzy herself, this Mediterranean-style farmhouse is one dream holiday spot!

A Converted Train Carriage Turned Breathtaking Off-Grid Cabin

Tara Rowe and her partner Luke have lived with their young family on their 300 acre farm on the west coast of South Australia for the last seven years.

The property is half a working farm (yielding wheat and canola crops) and half a regeneration project, but the couple have always wanted to create a boutique accommodation offering on their slice of remote wilderness. So, when they found an antique train carriage at a junk sale in a neighbouring town, a unique opportunity presented itself!

Restored with local timber and filled with a mix of vintage furniture by local dealers and new pieces by Australian makers – The Greenly Carriage has panoramic views over the Southern Ocean, Mount Greenly, Lake Greenly and the rolling countryside. This is a very special place to stay!

This Mid '60s Sibbel Home In Healesville Is A True Family Legacy

Fleur Sibbel, Managing Director of Zuster Furniture,  grew up surrounded by great design. Her grandfather, Dutch architect Herman Sibbel, brought over the family business, Sibbel Builders, with his brother shortly after emigrating to Australia in the mid 1950s, building a legacy as one of Melbourne’s most significant designers and builders of mid century modern homes.

In 2019, Fleur and her husband bought an almost untouched Sibbel home in Healesville, built by her father and designed by her grandfather. With sensitive updates undertaken, Fleur, her Dad and builder Peter Cann (who started as an apprentice with Sibbel Builders before going out on his own) have restored this iconic home to its original glory, and then some!

A Colourful Log Cabin Surrounded By Forestland

In early 2020, interior stylist Emma O’Meara, her husband Simon, and their young kids were gearing up for an eagerly anticipated family trip to Italy. I think you know the end of this story.

But the cancelled holiday presented Emma and Simon with the opportunity to purchase their very own getaway  – a log cabin in Johanna, a magical part of Southern Victoria in the Otways, where the beach and the bush meet. The family have undergone some DIY renovations to update the cabin, transforming it into a colourful short-term accommodation that stays true to its original style, and reflects its spectacular surrounds.

A Perfect Day in Daylesford & The Macedon Ranges, With Paul Bangay

Most Melbournians will probably have visited Daylesford before – the bustling regional town, with its excellent restaurants, shops and vibrant creative community isn’t exactly a well kept secret. But, no matter how well you think you know the area,...
